Question 6 - What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Hardware that I used:

Using the mac allowed me to use a number of software products such as Final Cut, something that Windows computers wouldn't allowed to do. It also allowed me to make my product look much more professional done on professional software. These machines are also much more powerful than typical computers which benefited my product as there was much more storage for my more complicated products such as using Photoshop for my product.

Using the professional cameras allowed me to take well shot images of my models which when placed onto my product would make my magazine look much more professional. My models could therefore also feel more comfortable in front of a professional camera and would therefore give me better, cleaner images.

Using the tripod in my photography made it much easier to take pictures as I could set up the shot a lot better and therefore benefited my magazines because it allowed me to take much more professional looking images.

Using the lighting set up again allowed me to take much more professional looking images as it gave me much clearer, well lit images. Again it made my models feel more comfortable as they were working in a professional looking studio which as a result gave me more professional looking images.

Using Photoshop in the production of my magazine gave me a much more professional product with all the tools it allowed me to use, even if it is quite a complex way to make the products. Tools such as Fx allowed me to make my product look a lot more visually interesting and it would stand out to the reader. Also the use of layering allowed me to place sell lines and my models where I wanted them to go, which allowed me to specify to the pop genre magazine I was aiming for because it allowed me to create clean looking product that didn't look too busy. This as a whole therefore benefited my production.

When creating my product with InDesign it allowed me to format text around my double page spread which was very helpful when writing my article. Because of this I could set out my double page spread exactly how I wanted to which again made my product look much more professional and also another tool which helped me is the image placement tool as it allowed me to size and place my images correctly again giving me a much more professional looking product.

Prezi helped me a lot with audience research as I could set it all out very clearly, and also clearly compare my products with professional looking products. This therefore gave me an idea of what my product would need to look like to compete with professional products that are currently on the market.

Blogger helped me as it was a way to access outstanding work that I had to do which gave me notice of all work I need to complete, it also allowed me to look back on my progress and refer to previous work I had done which was helpful when creating my product as I could just have a look for audience research back on my blog. It was a good way of storing work as I knew where I could find all my work and also it taught my how to use new technologies as I could embed things such as Prezi onto my blog

Slideshare benefited me when created my product as I could embed previous work I had made on Powerpoint onto my blog and gave me an online storage of work, therefore I knew I would never lose work I had made this way as it stored it online and also Powerpoint again allowed me to place my audience research on a program and could always refer back to it.

Question 5 - How did you attract/address your audience

Question 5
View more presentations from laurenbarden.

Feedback:

What I found:
Masthead and colour scheme worked well, bold and stands out
Font design was good
Consisten colour scheme works well
Images represent my pop genre well (mainstream artists like Beyonce and mainstream sell lines)
Represents mainstream audience
Professional looking pages, particularly contents page with the sell lines
Need to make product look less bland

Question 4 - Who would be the audience for your media product?

This mood board is a visual representation made on glogster of my target audience and some of their interests. My target audience is aged 16-24 and are predominantly female although some males may take interest in my product. My audience can be of any class, and are of mainstream stereotype. This means that have common interests and I am not targeting a niche market. From my mood board I represented this with high street shops, chain restaurants which attract a younger age as they are reasonable priced representing the age of my target audience. Also the mainstream group is reached with chart music artists shown on my mood board such as Adele and Rihanna. The age group is also represented through the use of the TV shows shown on my mood board which are aimed at younger audiences.

Question 3 - What kind of media institution might distribute your product and why?

Question 2 - How did you represent social groups

Draft Marking

I was given various feedback on the research and planning aspect of my coursework and I found a number of things. I need to go over my previous work and add media terminology to my work to make it more detailed and also add more information about how all my analysis will effect my product and my ideas. I need to relate the information I found more to my products so that my final product will reflect my research.
I also need to develop more audience research discussion and hopefully create an audience profile for my magazine which will include quotes from my audience feedback. I am also going to add more information to my article research.

Progress Update

There are 6 weeks until the Easter break which means - 6 weeks of lesson time to complete my foundation portfolio.

There are 60 marks available for construction and 20 marks for Research and Planning and 20 marks for evaluation - 100 marks in total

To achieve a grade:

A I need to get 80 marks

B I need to get 70 marks

C I need to get 60 marks

To be in level 4 (grade A/B) my work must demonstrate excellence throughout.

I am aiming for at least a grade B which means I need to get 70 marks for my overall product which includes the construction, research and planning and then my evaluation. I am aiming to have a rough cut of my products by the 5th March and to have most of my photography completed by the 24th of february. I am going to begin creating the outline of my products on Photoshop and InDesign now so that when I have done my photography they will be finished already.

Test Shots

This is a pose which will be similar to the one on my cover page. It is a mid shot of the model and I have chosen this pose as I think it will look visually interesting to the reader and will stand out on the page.
This is the pose that my model will be doing on my double page spread. I have chosen this pose for my model as it again makes the model look more interesting rather than a typical pose. As there is no obvious facial expression it makes my model look more interesting and mysterious, however she still is addressing the reader as she is looking directly into the camera.
This is similar to a pose that my model will be doing on the contents page. It makes her look friendly and not overly theatrical as it is a simple pose. She is also directly addressing the reader making her seem more approachable, therefore gaining fan support.

Evidence Of Costume Organisation

This is the style of outfit that my cover model will be wearing:
I have chosen an outfit like this as I feel that it represents the type of artist on the cover. It is very feminine as shown by the pink and the sparkles matching to the pop artist on the cover, however it is also not plain, the sparkles on the top of the dress are quite bold and will catch the readers eye which is something that I aim for. It again targets the female audience I want quite well however it will also be appealing to males as they may find the model attractive in this outfit and it will catch their attention therefore making them want to buy the magazine and read about the artist. It will also fit with the colour scheme on the page of white and blank, it will stand out and look visually interesting to the reader. I feel this outfit will also match the glamorous style of the artist and represent her well. The make up and hair styling of this model will be matching the femininity of the outfit, very soft and quite natural with feminine colours used like pink.

This is the style of shirt that the male model will be wearing on my contents page, he is only going to be shown from a mid shot so the reader won't be able to see the rest of his outfit. I chose this shirt as I feel it is quite mainstream and simple, matching the artists house music genre which isn't overly theatrical, mostly focusing on music so I want this artist to be styled to represent that well.

This is the dress that my model on my contents page will be wearing. I have chosen an outfit like this as it will contrast well with the simple colour scheme that is on that page of black and white. It also makes the artist again seem very feminine however not completely as the red adds excitement to the artist matching the type of dramatic artist that she is. It suggests to the reader that the artist has somewhat of an edge about her and is very theatrical and enjoys big performances. The sparkles on the dress will also entice the reader as it will stand out on the page. The model's make up will consist of quite dark eyes and red lips, again to reduce the artist looking too sweet and girly. This will appeal to the male readers as well as female readers because of the sexuality of the styling.

This is the outfit that will be appearing on my double page spread. I chose this as it works well with the femininity of the pose that my model will be doing and it also works well with the colour scheme on the page. It matches the artists feminine pop style of music that she produces. This style of music will make the artist look very graceful and not overly theatrical which is what I want as I want her to be a role model to the younger readers. The styling of hair and make up will stand out a bit more because of the simpleness of the outfit, eye make up will quite heavy so that they stand out and the artist doesn't look too boring and hair will be quite big and will be curled

Model Release Forms

Risk And Hazard Assessments

The forms shown here are my risk and hazard assessment forms for my photography location recce. All of my images shown in my magazine will be shot here. My evaluation showed me that there are 3 possible hazards at my location. They were cables, costume/makeup and lighting.

Wednesday 8 February 2012

Recce Of Location

The main location where I will be shooting my images is going to be a photography studio which has a lighting set up. It is very easy to access as it is located in college and already has a lighting set up meaning it is virtually ready to use and requires very little preparation. It is also a good area to shoot my models as they will be able to find it easily, it doesn't require a lot of effort on their part so I can guarantee that they will be available for the photo shoot.

It is generally a safe and hazard free environment which will enable me to work well within the photoshop and be aware of the safety of myself and my models. This location also enables me to shoot with a white background which is the background I want for a large portion of my magazines. It is a very easy accessible

Planning An Article

The article which will be featured in my double page spread is going to be about a female pop solo artist. It is going to be written in the style of an interview about their experience of rising up the music charts. To start with there will be a brief introduction of the artist and their role in the music industry which will be written in the third person as it is just a general overview, as the interview is then shown the narrative will change to first person, the initials of the magazine will be in bold before the interviewers question and the artists response will be shown with their initials also in bold followed by their answer. I am choosing to do this as I feel as though it makes the artist seem much more relatable and approachable to the reader as they are seeing responses from the artist themselves. It is going to feature quite friendly and informal language as I again feel that this will make the artist seem much more approachable to the reader and as my magazine is aimed at a younger target audience I want it to be in the style of language that would be most suitable for them. I also want the interview to be quite fun and quirky as I want to match the article to the pop genre of my magazine, there would be no point in having quite blunt language seen in magazines such as NME which represent the rock genre for my pop magazine. There is going to be music industry related topics in the article such as the artists upcoming tour, how the found the recording experience and how they are promoting their album for example visiting different countries and going on radio tours.
The introductory paragraph is going to be quite a dramatic overview of the artist explaining how this is an exclusive interview with a bright new artist and how they are establishing themselves in the music industry. This makes the content of the article seem like a must read to the reader, they want to learn more first about the artist before anyone else as it is described as an exclusive and audiences typically enjoy knowing about huge upcoming artists before everyone else.
Some extra text that will be featured on the page is going to be quotes around the page from the artist themselves representing the type of person they are. I am doing this again to make the artist seem approachable to the reader in order to gain support and fan loyalty for the artist. Their will also be links to the artists twitter and facebook page, again another way of making fans loyal to the artist and want to follow what they are doing in the music industry and to gain news of upcoming tour dates and promotion events.

Article Research

The Muppets:
The way this article is written is the format of an interview, and the type of introduction used in this article is a summary introduction, which shows a brief introduction to what the article is about, it is quite formal and comical language which to the reader shows what type of characters The Muppets are, very humorous and fun. The format of an interview used here represents who the article is about as much more approachable, it allows the reader to feel much closer to those in the article and are therefore more interested in what they have to say.

Muse Article:
This article is written in first person as the article itself is about what the journalist is trying to achieve although the article is about Muse. This format gets across the journalists point of view better as it is his own opinion. The introduction here is also a summary introduction however it is much more different to the Muppet's article, it is not actually discussing Muse themselves it is again more about what the journalist is trying to achieve here.

You Me At Six Article:
This article is written in a third person narrative as it is a general overview of the band therefore allowing the reader to interpret the article however they want. The introduction shown is not only a very brief summary of the band it is also an anecdote introduction, this is when it uses a short account of some interesting or humorous experience to get the reader interested. This also relates to the type of artists that You Me At Six are, renowned for being quite fun and mischievous.

Image and Construction Analysis

This shot of Kelly Rowland could be used on a front cover as there is room for a masthead and sell lines over her image. Her eyeline is quite a bit higher than the rule of thirds suggesting that she has power and dominance, also she is looking directly into the camera therefore addressing the audience. Her outfit is very sexual because of the leather, therefore suggesting the type of artist that she is, she is a very feminine and sexual artist also relating to the type of music she produces. She also has a very sullen face and is pouting at the camera again emphasising the type of sexual appearance that she wants to come across therefore appealing to males that find her attractive and will therefore want to buy her music. One of her eyes is partially covered, this makes her seem quite mysterious in the image and although it doesn't make her seem very approachable it represents her music well and the type of artist that she is. The lighting is quite dark again emphasising the idea that she wants to come across as quite mysterious and sexual to the reader. Her dominance is also suggested to the reader with the leather outfit she is wearing and also that she is shot from a low angle it again makes her look more dominant towards the reader as they are looking up at her when they see this image.

This image could be seen as a double page spread as it would generally be too wide to fit on a front cover. It is a very simple shot and all the boys in the group are shot on a similar rule of thirds despite their height suggesting that all the members are equal to the reader. This is also emphasised by the fact that they are generally wearing similar outfits, all very dark outfits and similar style of clothes. Although two members of the group are shot closer up this could be because they are either more well known and recognised by audiences or for the simple fact that they all had to fit on the page this way. They are all showing similar facial expressions and body language, they aren't appearing particularly dominant to the reader as they aren't shot from a low angle however as they are looking directly into the camera they are therefore addressing the reader. This could be done to make the boys seem more down to earth and approachable, trying to gain fan loyalty. Their facial expressions look quite sullen making the boys seem very mysterious but also show their sex appeal, which would be done to gain female fans who find them attractive and would therefore want to buy their music. The dark lighting again emphasises their mysterious element, signifying their sex appeal. It doesn't particularly represent their genre of music (pop) however as there is no instruments shown for the band and they all look relatively mainstream this suggests to the reader that the group are unlikely to be of a rock genre, they have been represented as a typical boyband through their outfits and styling.

This has influence my photography as I now know I need to take into account things such as the rule of thirds, in order to make my model on the front cover seem more dominant I am going to shoot them higher than the rule of thirds but I also want them to be looking straight into the camera therefore directly addressing the reader. On my front cover I also want clothing that shows them as a chart artist, something quite mainstream but also shows them as being quite quirky and feminine as this is the type of artist I want to show on my front cover. Also I want quite bright lighting so that the artist seems much more approachable to the reader rather than mysterious, I feel this would also represent the pop artist I am going to depict my model to be. However I want their facial expression to be quite mysterious as I feel that this has a much better effect on the reader rather than a simple friendly expression which I feel could be quite boring. On my double page spread I again want the artist to seem quite mysterious although it is a different artist. The clothing is again going to be quite feminine and quirky to represent the artists pop genre. Their actual body is going to be facing away from the camera but their head is going to be slightly turned so that you can still see their eye level and they can be directly addressing the reader. They will be shot generally on the rule of thirds again so that they seem more approachable to the reader, yet they still look quite mysterious through the use of their body being turned away. The lighting is again going to be quite bright to represent the pop genre my artist is representing.

Feedback On Flat Plans

Front cover:

The feedback I received on my front cover generally tells me that the three people who commented on my flat plan liked the cover on a whole, particularly the main image as they felt it was simple yet interesting to look at and that it fills the page well. I also found that they thought the simple masthead works well on the front cover, that it fits the genre of the magazine I am creating well. Also I found that the main image title works well as it is visually interesting to look at and again fits well with the genre of my magazine. I found that my layout does appear very simple, however one criticism I received was the front cover itself was too cluttered, this therefore tells me that perhaps I should remove some of the sell lines in order to make more room on the page and make it easier for the audience to read.

Contents Page:
The feedback that I was given on my contents page generally tells me that the images were well liked as they filled up the page and made it look more interesting. I was told that the page on a whole was simple and distinctive which was the look I was going for when designing my contents page. I also found that those analysing my contents page found that it was clear and organised, very easy to understand. It shows the information of my contents clearly.

Double Page Spread:
The feedback I generally received on my double page spread is that the layout worked very well for my magazine, it fits the genre well and is very simplistic yet still eye catching. I also found that those analysing my magazine felt that the bold font made the page look interesting and stylish as it catches the readers eye. The layout was also clear for my audience to understand, it wasn't cluttered it was organised and spacious. They also felt the title worked well on the page and caught the readers eye.

Flat Planning

This is the flat plan of the front cover that I will be creating. I chose to just use one main image to make a statement to the reader that this artist will be highly featured in my product, therefore making it more likely for them to buy my product, I chose to use a close up shot of my main image as from previous research I have found that magazines use this to make a statement to the reader and catch their eye with the use of a powerful image. The model used in my main image will be looking quite feminine to match the genre of my magazine which is pop, also my magazine is generally aimed more at younger females so I want them to be able to relate to the model used on the front cover and therefore feel more inclined to buy my product. I discovered from research that readers prefer when the model is shot in a studio, being able to be styled to fit the genre of the magazine, it allows more focus to be on the model rather than what is around her. The colouring of the image will again be quite feminine, colours such as pink and white being frequently used, however not completely throughout the magazine as I feel this completely shuts out male readers. The masthead is going to be in a simple font as I feel this would make my product look much more professional and shows diversity with my product, although it is generally on a pop slant it will feature much more genres so I do not want to shut out other readers whose favourite style of music may not be pop, I have based this decision on seeing magazines such as Kerrang! and the masthead used their seems to focus on just readers who enjoy rock music. The masthead will be black with the "O" filled in with colour which I have seen on other products and it makes the masthead look very professional but adds some colour to the product also. I have used sell lines with phrases in them such as "Exclusive" and "New Artists Inside!" and "Hot On The Charts!". This will be to draw readers in and make the magazine more appealing, it makes the reader want to read the articles featured in the magazines. There is also a number of other sell lines and the sell line to go with my main image is "Star Of The Year", this makes the reader very interested in what the article is about as it pairs well with the bold main image which makes a statement to the reader. There is also a sky line which tells the reader that there is a free CD included, this again makes them more inclined to buy the magazine as they know that they will get a free gift inside. There is a bar code and price in the bottom right hand corner of the magazine.
This is the flat plan of my contents page that I produced. It is going to have a simple white background with the same sort of title used on the masthead on the front cover, the simple black font with the "O" filled in. I am doing this as I want my magazine to look consistent and professional throughout. The main articles featured in my magazine will be listed on the right hand side of the page with enough spacing so that the reader will have no problem reading it and will not find the page too cluttered which I found was a problem from my research. Also the "Contents" title is placed on it side, I did this so that there was more room for images on the page so that the reader would not find the page as dull if there was less images for them to look at. Also I feel that the title placed on it sides makes the contents page much more interesting visually to look at, rather than just a typically placed title on the top of the page which I feel is worn out and boring for the reader to look at. The articles listed will again be in a simple black font, subtle on the page and easy for the reader to read, it is simplistic but not so that it will be boring for the reader, just gives the contents page a much more professional appearance. The image on the top left of the screen is depicting an artist representing the house music genre, it is a very simple head shot of the artist, nothing posed or dramatised, simple enough to represent the type of artist this man shown is. The bottom left image is of a smiling girl representing the pop genre, she looks very friendly and quirky which I feel represents this genre well, I am going to make it quite a feminine image also to appeal mostly to the female readers as I specifically want to target them with my magazine. The bottom right image is going to be an extreme close up shot of a girl, mostly featuring their eyeline, I am choosing to do this as I want this to be a very bold, statement image as it is going to be the article featured on my double page spread so I want the image to catch the readers attention and be visually interesting for them to look at. There has specifically been a mix of genres shown on my contents page as I want my magazine to be able to appeal to many target audiences rather than block many audiences who like different music genres.

This is the flat plan I designed for my double page spread that I am going to produce. There is a main image of my artist on the right hand side, taking up most of the page, I want it to be a simple, posed image with no props so that the girl alone will stand out to the reader and it will be a simplistic professional image that shows off the model alone. There will be a quote featured underneath the image of the artist to make the page look more interesting and less boring which it would if it just featured an image alone. I want the image to represent the artist as the pop/mainstream genre that she is part of, so the outfit used will be quite fun and girly, again making the magazine more relateable to the female audience my magazine is generally targeting. The title "Rock or Role Queen?" is going to appear how it is drawn, with red font so that it stands out on the page, and the question mark will be black, this colour contrast makes the title look much more interesting and the quote shown underneath the artist will also be black, however the inverted commas will be red, again the contrast looks much more visually interesting to the reader. There is going to be an introductory paragraph and four columns of text with a quote in the middle of the text, designed the same way as the quote underneath the artist. I took the idea of the enlarged quote from my textual analysis research as I felt it was effective and makes the page look much more interesting rather than a whole page of plain text. The colour of the article again will be black, contrasting to the white background of the page.

Research into a Potential Target Audience

Q magazine reader profile:
Q's audience is composed of passionate, engaged and open minded music fans driven to continually discover new music - and to use this lust for discovery to influence their friends. The audience is split 75% male to 25% female and is affluent (with 68% ABC1).

NME reader profile:

http://www.nme.com/mediapack/pdf/nme_media_information_full.pdf
20/1/12

The audience which my magazine would be targeted at are relatively young readers (16-24 year olds) who are passionate about many types of music genres and music which is currently in the UK charts at the time. However the magazine will also have a section of it aimed at audiences who enjoy discovering new artists who are unsigned and relatively unknown. The magazine will typically be aiming at the female gender because of the magazines large pop slant. I am targeting this group as there isn't many UK magazines which focus on an audience who enjoy a number of music genres not just one specific one, also most UK magazines such as Q are mainly targeting the male population so my magazine will be aiming at the audience who haven't got a product designed for them.

How will this affect the content of my magazine?

This will affect the content of my magazine in a number of ways. For example as my magazine is targeting a younger audience of 16-24 year olds I will have to use younger models who my audience will be able to relate to. The magazine will also have to be designed in a much more feminine way as the audience it is targeting is females. The language of my magazine will be less formal than that used in magazines I have analysed such as Q as this is targeting a generally older audience than my magazine will be. The price of my magazine will have to be considered also, as my audience is generally quite young they are more likely to be students and therefore will have less money to spend on things such as magazines.

Research into Institutions that Distribute Similar Products

Textual Analysis

Initial Ideas and Feedback

For my magazine my idea is to have a magazine which specialises in the typical mainstream/pop genre however also has aspects of other genres within it such as indie and house. In order to make sure my product is professional I am going to look at magazines such as Q and Billboard which fit the type of genre that I am looking for my magazine to specialise in. My magazine will feature local solo artists who fit the style of music my magazine is looking for.

Flat Plan

The colours I have chosen to the feature on the student magazine fit the target audience well as I feel that they are very friendly and bright, something which would appeal to a student magazine's audience of teenagers. I do not feel that they would be interested in a dull colour palette as it would not stand out.

I chose this style of layout because I think it represents a typical magazine layout, something which you would expect to see in a real magazine. Some sell lines will be bigger than the others representing the importance of some stories, these will be featured more than others. The main image will be featured on the right side of the cover, again very similar to typical magazines. The mast head is larger than all sell lines on the page, to clearly show the name of the magazine so it is easily recognisable to the reader.

The sell lines I have used all fit the genre of a student magazine, offering advice to students, free equipment, and trip information etc. They will relate well to the target audience as it will all be useful information for them. As the magazine would be a free handout I think that it would be more sought after as it is all helpful free advice for students.

The main image will be taken at a mid close up and will be using a two light set up. The only prop will include a folder for the model to represent them as a college student to make them relateable to the target audience.

Inspirational Texts

This contents page from OK magazine has a very simple layout, images representing the stories featured in the magazine itself. The actual contents itself is aligned all together, it doesn't create that much of a packed imagine so the reader wouldn't just skip past it if they felt it was too much to read. The images are all set in the same part of the page so the reader can view them all at the same time.

This magazine cover is very colorful and bold which shows how it would stand out to it's target audience on the shelf. It also appeals to the target audience which is teenage girls by using a celebrity who would appeal to them on the front of the magazine which would interest them in buying the magazine even more. The masthead is very bright so a reader would not struggle to find out what the actual name of the magazine is. It has no specific alignment for the sell lines they are just placed in dead space on the magazine which means the magazine looks very full so the reader would feel that they would get good value for money.

This magazine cover again has a very bright and colorful masthead so the reader could easily recognize this when placed among other magazines. All the sell lines appeal to that of it's target audience which again would be teenage girls. This cover has a specific color scheme of orange, yellow and pink which are all very bright and girly, similar to the style of the magazine itself. The main image is again a celebrity who would appeal to the magazine's audience convincing them further to buy the magazine.
